art, Li Shun’s compositions seek to resonate with the spirit of the text on which they are painted. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World constructs a distant dystopic future to deliver its biting and allusive satire on the times. In the vicissitudes of the present age, caught in the storms of a pandemic, the future world imagined by the confined artist Li Shun seems just as dreamlike and remote.

Fortunately, artists and art have refused to be passive in the face of the great transformations of our era. Li Shun makes use of Internet to reboot the system, to blur spatiotemporal boundaries, using Google Maps to unearth and delve into the data on which he has set his sights. From his early Internet Sketch series and its reconstructions of apparently random places and sceneries, to his more recent work gathering pictures from the internet of galleries and artworks from all over the world, Li Shun’s art both unifies and continues to transform its object. The photographs of classic paintings on Google Maps are not only true-to-life representations; they are also fragments, partial snapshots of a greater whole, which seem to return us seamlessly to another Brave New World. For Li Shun, therefore, to imitate the great masters is at once an act of respect for tradition and an attempt to keep building on the past.

However, Li Shun’s art has always led with the conceptual. From a relatively early stage, he has refused to approach emotion and narrative from a linear perspective, which has resulted in work that is both intricate and cyclical. His methods and processes for realising his metaphorical ambitions are complex. In the Street View setting of Google Maps, Li Shun locates a gallery and zeroes in on paintings by artists such as Van Gogh, Dürer or Pieter Bruegel the Elder. By taking a screenshot, he is able to display in great detail the original work, zooming in on any section he pleases, which gives him all the time he needs to create a copy on his canvas of book pages. From a copy of a screenshot of a photograph, Li Shun creates a negative of the newly created work, which he prints and mounts on an aluminium plate. The original screenshot is also printed out, mounted in a traditional frame and displayed alongside the first copy and the negative to form an intricately interrelated complex of images that transcends space and time.

As a young artist, Li Shun channels the spirit of the traditional “man of letters,” but his is no intransigent, indulgent traditionalism. As someone working in contemporary society and its cultural context, the depth, eclecticism and creativity he has pursued in the oeuvre and aesthetic system he has been building over the years allows a certain philosophy of art to reveal itself. The artist observes and scrutinises the world in search of a new direction or path, armed with the ability to present knowledge, probe culture and engender thought. The beauty of art provides viewers with visual pleasure while also attempting to interrogate the shared complexities people today and tomorrow face or are about to face. At the same time, Li Shun’s keen use of technology and tools turns our contemporary wanderings through cyberspace into a journey into the spiritual landscape of the past.

Li Shunwas born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, in 1988. He graduated from the School of Intermedia Art from China Academy of Art with master's degree. Currently works and lives in Hangzhou, China. Inspired by photography, light is the absolute protagonist of Li's art practice, in which the transformations between positive and negative images are at the root of his works. His artworks are diverse, with a particular focus on the expressiveness of various mediums and materials. His works embody rich connotations. For Li, the purpose of photographic art is always to focus on the image as an experience or human emotions. To do so, one should generate ideas and grasp symbolism and metaphors, shifting one's position from receiving visual impressions to actively creating visual expressions. Li has actively participated in numerous exhibitions both at home and abroad. Significant exhibitions include Futurism of the Past, Beijing Exhibition Center, Beijing (2021); Imaginary Tour , Beijing Art Now Gallery, Beijing (2019); Chinglish , Make Room, Los Angeles (2019); Oceanic Scroll , Beijing Art Now Gallery, Beijing (2018); Hong Kong Art Basel-Li Shun Project, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, Hong Kong (2018); Li Shun Solo Exhibition , Beijing Art Now Gallery, Beijing (2016); Post-Brushwork Era: Chinese Landscapes , Guangdong Museum of Art Co Zhejiang Art Museum, Guangzhou Co Hangzhou (2018); Calligraphic Time and Space: Abstract Art in China , Power Station of Art, Shanghai (2015), etc. His works can be seen in numerous private and public collections, including: White Rabbit Gallery (Australia), HOW Art Museum (Shanghai), ZHI Art Museum (Chengdu), Guangdong Museum of Art (Guangzhou), Foundation Tichy Ocean (Switzerland), HL Art Collection (America).
